New Year's Eve

I do not toast to new beginnings
Or to adventures old
I will not discuss the year gone
Until the winter's cold
I am not here to celebrate
A calender come to an end
But I will toast to loyalty
And drink to every friend

____________
Admittedly I'm on remote and will probably get called back into the hospital and not do any celebrating at all, but never mind (and even if I don't I can't drink because I'm on call)

Camping

Inskip point was lovely. Despite what everyone said we managed to get a good campsite, close to the beach, good breeze, enough trees to hang hammocks. There was a big fire off in the distance the first night we were there and we went for a big long walk, but never reached it. we then came across some people who had been fishing and they had caught a shark off the beach. Perhaps the next thing we did was a bit foolish in light of that - we went for a swim. you could see all the plankton or whatever it is glowing all around you when you moved your hands and legs, it was soo beautiful and lots of fun. And eventually we managed to find our campsite (the light had gone off and it turned out we'd walked a _long_ way past it). Other then that it was mostly swimming, drinking cider and lying in hammocks:) Perfect!!!

Merry Christmas from Oscar and bec

Well I got oscar out so we could do a merry christmas photo together, unfortunately my phone rang while I had him out and so now he is a somewhat grumpy mood. Oh well. he is presently doing his best to flip the phone over so he can chew the buttons off. Which would be kind of sad because I already lost the "no" button in an unfortunate throwing phone onto the street accident

I have to admit, I'm supposed to be cooking right now and probably I'm supposed to be wrapping chocolates in little packages, but I just decided not to. I'm sure I'll get around to it. In fact I'd better pretty soon. Just had to yell at oscar. When I use the shift key my finger gets too close to the phone and he thinks I want it (I'm not allowed to use the phone). *&^% that really hurt. He did it again. I have put him away now. Little rat.

Oh, anyway, here are some photos of me and oscar being christmassy together! (his contribution is being green, not sure what mine is!)

Christmas Shopping

Smile
Don't rush around
Madly
Angrily
Do not glare
Because they're in your way
Don't be so busy
Take the time
To look around
And enjoy
There is beauty
There is ugliness
But if all you think of
Is what is not pleasing
You soon become it

So stop
Smile
Give a bit more light
To the dark mad rush
Together
Let's reverse
The death of christmas

Beyond Anything

I didn't smile for you
But nor am I crying
Beyond anything
I'm happy you are trying
But what's lost in what's found?
What's gone, flesh for pound?

I didn't dream for you
But do you really wake?
When darkness falls
Do you ignore what's at stake?
Dreams, nightmares, the same coin
Undo or rejoin?

Why all doctors are bitter

Because we have to spend years working in public hospitals being screwed over by the most unorganised people in the world. Luckily today I was busy when they tried that one on me. They called to tell me I had to work in ED next week (26/12 onwards) and I was in theatre so the other resident called them and told them i couldn't do it because I would be away. They have sent a very nasty email to one of the other interns who said they couldn't make it on such short notice as they had booked a holiday. Told him he didn't have a choice, it was just his tough luck, didn't matter about the money he had spent on a holiday, they can do what they want, make us work whenever and wherever they like. MMmmm... They're shooting themselves in the back, next year we won't be interns, and we'll be able to quit when they treat us like crap!!!!! (which is why they need us in ED at the moment, some second years quit when they didn't get what they needed).

sleepless

sleepless, I toss, I turn
I stand, I walk
I give in to the inevitable
I do not lay awaiting
Now tomorrow
Takes on a dark glow
Knowing the wakefulness
Fully expected
Sigh

At the lights

The wind coursed over my skin
Like a stranger's hands
Separate
I'm not a part of it
I am aware of it
I am still
The earth and I are not one today
The sun beats down
A heavy burden
Bright in it's brilliant heat
As i wait
Aware of the earth beneath my feet
Then a cold metal chirp
Starts my feet
And I am moving
The wind no longer strange
No longer separate
As I move with it

sleepy

i feel so sleepy. I've been feeling sleepy all day, but now that I've had lunch I'm even sleepier.

I'm too sleepy to even write this post, I had something in my head but it flew away.

Emergency Department - Somewhere stupid people go for fun

Okay, so at about 6pm friday night I finished for the night and was on my way to peking duck at the pine and bamboo (the best place in brisbane to have peking duck IMHO). About 5 minutes after I hopped in my car I get a call - they're busy in ED (I'm remote) they need me for an hour. Everyone knows that's a lie. They're going to need me for more then an hour. I can kiss peking duck goodbye.

then I see lots of stupid people with ridiculous complaints who wait immense amounts of time (7 hours) to complain about traffic noise (I'm not joking, that was one of my pts complaints - why they were there!). Oh well, it's all a bit of fun.

This was going to be a long and boring whinge but I just realised I'm late for theatre.

Will whinge later.

I need advice

This is probably not a very good use of my blog, but I seriously need some advice. You see I'm not really a grown up. I don't really know how to do things like moving interstate. At the moment we're considering what to take and what not to take when we move to melboure (esp as it's just for 1 year). Currently I think the plan is to take _as little as possible_ and to try to drive everything else up ourselves (could be tricky). Does anyone think that's a realistic option? I have a twincab toyota hilux (NOT 4WD), with a covered back... DOn't know what would fit in. If we do that we'll have to find a place to rent with white goods in melbourne, or rent white goods. Not sure what we'd do about the bed... Does anyone have any good ideas? We spent our "moving to melbourne" money on a computer, so it needs to be as cheap as possible. Help if you can. Thanks.

Scared Oscar

I forgot to mention how I accidently gave oscar a scare. You know how when you hop out of bed, you look around for something to wear around the house? Well today the closest thing I found was a lab coat.... And it works because it's not quite as heavy as my bathrobe and it is particularly hot in brisbane today (although I do have my airconditioning on). Apparantly my mad scientist outfit gave him a bit of a fright (Probably it would give anyone a fright:) ). When I put my labcoat shrouded arm in his cage, he ran to the other side (which is almost out of my reach as it's not such a small cage). FOR ONCE THE LITTLE MONSTER WAS SCARED OF ME!!! So this time who's running from who my little Oscar????? He is back in his cage sulking.

Surgical Virgin

Hold my hand
Grip it tight
Stranger scared
By surgeon's bite
See your skin
Drip with sweat
Unfamiliar
Don't forget
Close your eyes
Breathe in deep
Soon so soon
You'll be asleep
Cut and burn
Do you dream
Sew you up
One new seam

Evil Oscar

Ã…ctually it is only because there is a camera hidden in my computer that we were able to take a photo of oscar. It's on his list of pet hates - cameras, telephones and trivial pursuit. The other day we forgot he hated cameras and Matt got out a camera to load pictures on to the computer (we weren't using the camera, just plugging it in) and Oscar bit him rather hard and both of them were very grumpy (matthew still had the mark the next day). THat's why it's so important to have an imac G5. These are our first official photos of the little monster.

working

okay, at least on my computer, it is working:) Which is exciting, let me know if it can't be seen by other people. Unfortunately the photos aren't quite in the order I intended, but I'm happy enough for now. Isn't my Oscar cute?

photos

okay this is testing to see if I actually am capable of sticking a photo on my blog. If it worked you should see a photo of my bird oscar:) he is very cute and has actually been behaving like he likes me tonight (which is quite unusual). I will also try to add a cool "comic style" picture I took of him with the little camera on my computer. Hold on, let's see if i can manage.....

I dream at night

So long gone
When I dream
I don't know if it's you
For who are you now
Will I see someone I remember
Or someone else
Will we be able
To regain
All that is blurred by time
I dream too much
See too much
Hope too much
I don't know how to rest when I close my eyes
I am busy all night long
Chasing, chasing, endlessly chasing
All these things
All these people
And you
Have I let you down?
We'll be there soon
We'll know the truth

cigar experiment

Well I wanted to hop straight on to my blog sunday morning to share my little cigar experiment, but alas I got called into work. I had to assist at theatre (spinal ortho - sticking screws into spines attaching rods and stuff to support where the fractured vertebrae wasn't supporting). Took hours and hours, and because we had to wear lead due to all the xraying, I was very warm and exhausted.

But saturday night we went out to the engagement party then we came home and decided to try the whole "smoking a cigar while you drink port helps to develop the flavour of the port". So we sat out on our veranda, giggling like naughty children, and smoking a cigar and drinking port (we tried to avoid inhaling - we could just imagine all the throat and lung cancer and the hardening arteries from what we were doing). It was kind of fun (although smelly). I think the jury is still out on whether it actually does change the flavour of the port. Sadly, we didn't even get through one whole cigar between the two of us (mostly because we would have had to go and get more port to have with it), but I think it will give us a chance to try it with another port.

exciting

in a flash of inspiration, I suddenly realised that it wouldn't be too hard for me to work out how to add links to my sidebar and throw my friends blog addresses there. So much easier then surfing back through past comments so I can jump from them to their blogs. Maybe I should add a strangers links too... Will contemplate that while I am out tonight, I have just been informed that it is out of bathrobe into clothes and out to face the world time. What a terrible time.

A sad farewell, to goats and cheese

I have some very, very, very sad news. The goat farm has shut down. They have decided that they weren't making any money, and it was a lot of hard work. So it is the end. We got there and they are just selling off the last of their cheeses. We bought a lot of cheese this weekend. They had a few goats that they were minding for other people (which were still adorable and very lovely and loved to be patted) but they have sold all their goats. Very, very distressingly, they had no fudge. Now none of you will ever know they joy which is lime, coconut and ginger fudge.

Otherwise I had a great weekend (apart from waking up with a massive headache on friday). First stop: the ginger factory, got a few things we need to make yummy ginger chocolates. Second stop: just past the nut place opposite the ginger factory. Mostly because Matt hates nuts with a passion and he was driving and deliberately left it too late to stop, so then we kept driving without an actual visit. Third stop: goat farm:( Fourth stop: kennilworth cheese factory - there were only two classic vintage cheddars left (not to be confused with their ordinary vintage cheddar), so we were lucky to get some (although it meant we had to buy a half round - matt didn't complain about that!). Fifth stop: Settler's rise winery - they were charging $2 to taste, I object to that in principal, so we just bought the port we wanted and left. Sixth stop: where we were staying.

We stayed at this little cottage just at the beginning of the strip of shops at montville. There was a small incident where the key we'd picked up from somewhere in brisbane wouldn't work in any of the doors and I started to freak out, but then I went back to the car and put dad's key back and found the actual key to the house which opened it just fine. The cottage has the ability to comfortably sleep 6. Fully equiped kitchen, lovely varanda, lots of puzzles and games, a tv and some stuff attached to it (didn't use the tv, couldn't comment on what was there). And it was literally next door to the first shop in the big line of shops.

Ate dinner at some little restaurant we went to on our honeymoon a couple of years ago. It was very yummy. I had snapper, oven baked with a coconut, lime and chilli sauce (delicious). Matt had venison with some sort of yummy sauce. We brought our own wine (1994 Wynn's Cab Sav). We shared an entree - coconut prawns, we also shared dessert - hot chocolate fudge cake. We went back to the cottage, but then i decided I wanted to try having a cigar with the port (as I have heard this is the way port is supposed to be drunk) so we walked the length of montville looking for somewhere that was open selling cigars - no luck. So we went home and drank some more of the wine.

Today we wandered around montville looking in all the old people shops, picked up some stocking stuffers for my nephews and nieces from the game store. Cooked ourselves some lunch (one whole swiss brown mushroom - cooked like a steak, an egg - fried, salami stuff - fried, all on ciabatta bread) and went to the maleny cheese factory. Nothing there stood out. Dropped by the ginger and nut place on the way home (I drove so magically the car was able to stop at the nut store).

Tonight we're off to an engagement party, then we will buy a cigar and I will experiment with cigars and port. (hopefully).

I am still very sad about the goat place. A period of mourning should be observed. Does anyone know where I can get goat curd from?

I love christmas. Apparantly people aren't too keen on getting their throats slashed (thyroidectomy) or their breasts removed before christmas. And I say "Good on you", mostly because that means i'm here at work with nothing to do again except update my blog. Now I do feel mildly guilty as my counterpart is busily seeing people in outpatients clinic, but it is a clinic that I traditionally don't go to (as I do the "ward work" today) so it's not really my fault. Plus at 11 (in 1 hour) I will have something to do so it's not like I'm going to be sitting here all day (which is actually a good thing because the day can move pretty slowly when you have no work).

Tonight when I get home, maybe I will update my blog using my new iburst internet:) I am so excited, an internet connection at home that won't take an hour to do just about anything:) yay:) I think i even get some kind of free web page with my new internet, but i'm yet to explore all of that. Perhaps if I had a webpage i'd scan in my B&W pics of Banda Aceh.... I'm not sure how, because I don't actually have a scanner... I'd have to find somewhere to do that.... now it sounds like effort, so I probably won't.

This weekend I'm off to Montville:) Staying somewhere nice, relaxing, then I'll go to Kennilworth and hit the two cheese factories. The best cheese factory is the little known goat farm. The goats are all hand raised so that they're easy to milk and they are soooooo cute. You go out to them and they run up for you to pat them and lean against you and they are sweet wonderful creatures. And some of them have long, floppy ears. Last time I was there it was kidding season (giggle) and there were 1 day old goats that were so sweet and lovely and the big ears just looked so silly and cute on them. Plus the cheese really is very very good. oh, and the fudge *mmmmmm* lime, coconut and ginger fudge made with goat curd. i swear you've never tasted something so delicious. I really like goat curd it turns out (it sounded gross but tasted great). You have it with sweet chilli sauce and biscuits. It's much tangier then cream cheese and really smooth and delicious. The goat factory (Matt gets very upset when I call it that, so I feel i must - apparantly it's either a cheese factory or a goat farm, not a combination) is off some little street of the obi obi road. Maybe someone else can remember the exact address... i'm sure they have a website, hold on I'll check, yep here it is http://www.coolabinefarmstead.com/cheeses.htm
I love all the cheeses too! Their fetta is spectacular.

Oh dear, I got a little carried away in my cheese loving there....

Perhaps i will continue this later, nature is calling.
