Cuscutlan
There is a song by Frente called Cuscutlan that I have been listening to a lot lately (well it's cuscutlan or cuscatlan, can't work out which spelling is correct). Despite it being an old song, it's lyrics have just seemed really relevent lately. Cuscutlan is what El Salvador was called before it was conquered and it is a song about that takeover and what's happened in El Salavador (Frente are Australian, I can't quite remember why they wrote a song about Cuscutlan). Despite the age of the song, I quite like the music, and I recommend having a listen to it if you can. Here are the lyrics:
***Cuscutlan*** by Frente
i love my country
but it wears a uniform
it speaks with foreign guns
in the background you can almost hear
the sound of intervention
and i don't know when liberty fell
but we rang every mission bell
we rang them loud and clearly
to a world that wouldn't listen
i don't want to die
i'm as innocent as anybody
i don't even know how to spell
revolutionary
jesus in the sky
the bullets in the guns
you don't even know what we
mean by repression
blood is the colour of the sunset
you walked into the darkness
i did not hear your last breath
there will not be an inquest
this is not human interest
we danced the dirt with
surrender for our drumbeat
we danced for the balance sheet
died for the kind of lasting peace
that pleases the world policeman
and fatherland raped motherhood
and told her it was for the global good
and now we ring the mission bell
to warn their children
and i don't want to die
i'm as innocent as anybody
i don't even know how to spell
revolutionary
jesus in the sky
the bullets in the guns
you don't even know what we
mean by repression
blood is the colour of the sunset
you walked into the darkness
i did not hear your last breath
there will not be an inquest
this is not human interest

it is a very pertinent song. i like that one.
i used to wonder why people could be so committed to their own view, and violently opposed to those who hold opposite views. then i went and did something stupid, like become a teacher, and realised people are more complex, self-centred, and self-righteous than i could have ever imagined.
or i might just be getting bitter in my old age.
I love Frente...they can sing about sad things but still leave you feeling light and happy...
Well, the song seems to be spelled "Cuscutlan", however there's this from Wikipedia:
Cuscatlán or Cuzcatlán was the name the original inhabitants of the Western part of the country gave to most of the territory that is now El Salvador. In their language it means "land of precious jewels".
So I guess it's spelled both ways.
Hey Beccles.
I went and obtained *cough* this song and it's much the awesome.
Also, forgive the lack of.. existing. Been busy with b'day (mine) and work (5 nights a week, I worked a 4pm till 2am shift and then had to wake up for an 8am lecture, omg, i sound like a hospital doctor :P) and stuff.
I'll post up a fatter version on my blog to stop being lazy! gogo tim
byee *hugs*
There are a few Frente songs I quite like, and I like their style. Glad Timmar enjoyed the song:) Have read your update:) Thanks to pitfinder - I was confused because amazon and HMV didn't seem to agree on the spelling:)
The Australian album spells it as "Cuscatlan" while the artistically inferior International version spells it "Cuscutlan", owing to the differences. Since the place is called "Cuscatlán", the first spelling is the definitive one.
i do like this song... the lyrics, the guitar, the music are awesome...
Frente is excellent even though it doesn't exist anymore (as i know)
